Western's Strategic Plan, "Achieving Excellence on the World Stage", recognizes the enormous pride Western takes in its physical setting in London, and the significant role it plays in recruiting and retaining the best possible students, faculty and staff.  The Manager, Landscape Services and Waste Management will play a critical role in ensuring Western is a beautiful and distinct residential campus. The Manager will provide leadership and ensure the proper planning, installation, maintenance and repairs are made to all turf, seasonal flower displays, trees, shrubs, planting areas, roadways, sidewalks, vehicular and pedestrian signage, and parking lots.  A significant aspect of this role is ensuring Health and Safety though winter controls.

The Manager will also ensure an effective waste and recycling program is implemented which encompasses all campus buildings and exterior amenities, and ensures the safe and reliable delivery of these services to University staff, faculty, students and visitors.  The Manager is accountable for ensuring that all legislative requirements applicable to landscape services and waste management are met and that the staff are trained as required.  The Manager will strive to maintain a high level of customer service supported by a continuous improvement plan.  The combination of these maintenance programs will support a sustainable, safe and functional campus.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   Post secondary degree in a related field (eg. Business, Management, Engineering) 
-   Horticultural degree or diploma is preferred
-   Ontario Landscape Exterminators license preferred
-   Valid Ontario Drivers license class DZ an asset

Experience:
-   5 years experience supervising staff in a unionized environment
-   5 years' experience in continuous improvement environment within a technical setting
-   10 years' experience in landscape maintenance management, preferably in an academic setting
-   10 years' experience in winter snow operations, waste management and recycling

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-   Thorough knowledge of the  Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Pesticides Act, Ontario  Highway Traffic Act
-   Thorough knowledge of plant materials
-   Demonstrated ability to implement a continuous improvement approach to developing and deploying best practices, policies and procedures
-   High degree of professionalism with outstanding ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management
-   Demonstrated coaching, mentoring and communication skills to enable team members to achieve high-quality outcomes
-   Demonstrated understanding of customer needs to ensure strong communications with both internal and external customers
-   Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively
-   Solid understanding of key financial principles coupled with experience managing a cost-recovery department
-   Emotional intelligence (self-knowledge, self management, social skills, empathy) to ensure own work life balance, health and energy, and good collegial relationships are maintained
-   Ability to work in a fluid and challenging work environment with changing deadlines
-   Intermediate knowledge of PeopleSoft (HR and Finance) and the Microsoft Office Suite, with strong administration skills in Maintenance Management Systems, including report generation
-   Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop a shared vision and lead changes
