Our mission is to direct and support the University's international strategy, while acting as a resource to faculties and departments across the Western community. The strategic and operational priorities of Western International fall under four functional headings: 1) International Undergraduate Recruitment; 2) International Learning; 3) International Student Services; 4) International Relations. Beyond these functional areas, Western International supports and facilitates the development of international activities as articulated in the international strategic plan across all areas on campus.
 
The role will function primarily in the area of international student advising, with a specific focus on immigration.  Immigration advisory services will be provided through individual confidential appointments, group workshops and online communications. The International Student Advisor will be accountable for working collaboratively with the International and Exchange Student Centre (IESC) Advising and Programming team to maintain and enhance services that support and meet the needs of Western's growing international client population.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   University degree, preferably in International Relations, Education, Cultural Studies, Language Studies, Sociology or other relevant field of study
-   Authorized Immigration Representative under section 91 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (e.g. certification from the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) as a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) or Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA), etc.)
 
Experience:
-   3 years' experience in advising or counselling; developing, implementing and evaluating programs, services and workshops
-   Prior experience as an International Student Advisor at a post-secondary institution is preferred
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Strong demonstrated advising and counselling skills including demonstrated knowledge and application of professional and ethical standards
-   Demonstrated excellent knowledge of Citizenship and Immigration Canada regulations pertaining to international students and their family members (e.g., immigration document extension procedures, policies, recent changes) 
-   Proven strong knowledge of provincial and federal government regulations affecting international students
-   Excellent knowledge of strategies and skills re: working with diversity or culturally diverse populations
-   Strong knowledge of the international/cross-cultural experience
-   Good understanding of theories or models, etc. of cross-cultural adjustment and transitions, and intercultural communication including challenges related to international students and immigrant/newcomers' issues and adaptation/integration challenges
-   Strong understanding and knowledge of anti-racist and anti-oppression frameworks
-   Proven strong tactful and diplomatic communication and interpersonal skills; ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous and effective manner
-   Demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills to enable team members to achieve high-quality outcomes with the ability to develop strong collegial relationships
-   Proven ability to successfully implement and critically evaluate advising service and programs.
-   Strong presentation and facilitation skills with demonstrated ability to conduct information sessions or workshops
-   Proven ability to manage complex and time-sensitive cases as well as multiple projects
