Job Description

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools. The Faculty has more than 130 full-time faculty, 65 staff full-time, 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students). Within the Dean's Office, the Technology Support Team provides cost-effective technology solutions and support to faculty, staff and students for the use and maintenance of technology and systems to support the teaching, learning, research and administrative needs of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
 
The Technical Specialist is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of all information technology needs and inventory for the Faculty of Health Sciences (over 700 PCs). The incumbent provides support to faculty, staff and students including assistance with troubleshooting hardware and software issues, educational technology, audio and video technology and configuring the required applications for the use within FHS. In addition, the incumbent analyses business needs, develops solutions and lead projects to address customer requests and resolve issues.
 
The Technical Specialist provides software license management for FHS, asset management and support existing and new desktop computers and peripherals. The incumbent will supervise, guide and monitor the activities of the Client Support Specialist in Elborn College regarding technical issues. The Technical Specialist works closely with the Director of Administration to ensure required services are available and assists with planning for hardware/resource enhancements to implement, maintain and administer resources necessary to support the academic, administrative, and research technical needs of the Faculty.
 
Qualifications
Education:
-   3 year Community College Diploma in Computer Programming, Computer Systems, Information Management or Information Technology
-   University Degree in Computer Science or equivalent is preferred
 
Experience:
-   5 years' current computer support experience including a variety of operating systems software, hardware, application software, and networking experience with laptops, mobile devices and servers
-   2 years' customer service experience
-   Previous technical support experience with Western's major ITS services and applications is preferred
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-    Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service directly and indirectly to satisfy those expectations
-   Proven ability to interact with faculty, staff and students in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
-   Proven knowledge of computer system administration, including computer networks, operating systems, and application software 
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments and adapt efficiently to emerging priorities
-   Demonstrated ability to identify and differentiate the symptoms and root causes of every day, defined technical problems and critical thinking and discernment to assess and scope areas for improvement and an ability to offer creative solutions
-   Applies new knowledge and skills to practical use on the job
-   Ability to resolve problems and escalate issues with suggestions for further investigation and options for consideration as required
-   Demonstrated staff management experience with an ability to develop a strong team
-   Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment for self and others
-   Demonstrated organizational skills including ability to manage multiple competing priorities working to tight time lines with appropriate supervision
-   Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical users from internal contacts up to senior management
-   Ability to carry out work independently during 'off hours' as required with appropriate guidance and training
