The mission of the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) is to further Western's research-intensive mission by becoming an internationally recognized Research Institute focusing in the area of green technologies specifically related to chemicals and fuels from alternative resources.
 
Please note that this position is affiliated with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The position will be located at ICFAR. 
 
The Technical Specialist provides technical support to STAR (smouldering combustion soil remediation) technology research and industrial applications at Western.  This includes setting up, running, assessing and troubleshooting a government and industry sponsored STAR soil pile pilot project (budget of over $745,000) at ICFAR. 
 
Qualifications 
Education:
-   Completion of a 3-year Environmental Technology Community College program required
-   Completion of a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Civil/Environmental Engineering is preferred
 
Experience:
-   3 years' experience in use of data acquisition systems (dataloggers), data plotting software (Matlab, Python), use and maintenance of equipment for thermal/chemical systems (thermocouples, pumps, compressed air) and/or use and maintenance of equipment for soil treatment (blowers, mixers, scrubbers) required
-   Direct, hands-on experience in design, repair, modification, construction and manufacturing of equipment, such as equipment used in large engineering industrial or academic facilities preferred
-   2 years' experience in research or industry beyond first degree would be an asset
-   Experience conducting tests with thermal processes (e.g., engines, reactors, combustion equipment)
-   Experience with construction of experimental systems particularly combustion or other high temperature systems
-   Experience using and maintaining environmental analytical instruments (for gas/liquid/soil analysis)
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Advanced knowledge of Matlab and Python (for driving data acquisition systems) and Solidworks, or equivalent required
-   Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Powerpoint, Word, Excel) required
-   Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently but also as part of a team
-   Superior communications skills needed (written and verbal) to work within team but also as a primary liaison with the industrial partners
-   Ability to work effectively under a tight deadline with related time pressure stressors
-   Demonstrated ability to carry out tasks with attention to detail
-   Must have a valid driver's licence and access to a car to drive between ICFAR, campus and various machine shops
