The Administrative Officer is an integral member of the administrative team in Political Science. The incumbent is accountable for management of the administrative operations of the Department. The incumbent manages the allocation of financial, human and physical resources and implements business processes to support the management of financial, operational and legal risk to the Department.

 

The Administrative Officer provides advice, guidance and direction to support human resources processes and the administration of research funding held by faculty members. This involves applying Human Resources guidelines in the hiring of research and administrative staff, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students. The incumbent will require considerable diplomacy and knowledge of human resource management principles, including Human Rights/Equity legislation.

 

Qualifications
Education:

- Undergraduate degree in Business or a related field

- Completion (or enrolment in) a recognized financial/professional program (ie. CHRP, CIM) is preferred

 

Experience:

- 5 years' experience in administration, in positions of increasing responsibility, preferably in an academic setting

- Previous budgeting and human resources experience

- Experience in a unionized environment is preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization

- Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments

- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development

- Strong customer service skills to handle enquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner

- Ability to work independently and take initiative and a strong sense of accountability

- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop a strong department team coupled with an ability to work effectively as a member of the management team

- Creative problem solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters

- High degree of professionalism with ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management

- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office and PeopleSoft (Financials, Human Resources)
