The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering (MME) is one of four departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty and staff in the department support and foster the educational and research pursuits of undergraduate and graduate engineering students, while providing the best student experience.
 
The primary role of the Laboratory Supervisor in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering is to provide technical support for the undergraduate teaching laboratories in the areas of advanced materials and metallurgy, solid mechanics and design. The incumbent ensures that students, staff and visitors working in the assigned labs are following proper safety procedures and have proper protective equipment for use of tools. The Laboratory Supervisor is also responsible for confirming that the required safety training, where relevant, has been obtained by students, staff, and visitors. The incumbent also assists faculty in the development of outlines, concepts, schedules, and procedural instructions for lab components of the curriculum.

Qualifications
Education:
-   Bachelors degree in Materials or Metallurgy Engineering or a Bachelor of Technology with strong background in Materials Engineering
-   Master's degree is preferred
 
Experience:
-   3 years' experience working in an academic laboratory environment in the areas of advanced materials and metallurgy, solid mechanics and design
-   3 years' experience with fabrication of composite materials and experimentation in materials and metallurgy
-   Experience with and knowledge of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Nanotechnology
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Proven experience working in an academic environment with faculty, researchers and undergraduate/graduate students
-   Proven proficiency in operating and trouble-shooting equipment and apparatus including heat treatment furnaces, tensile testing machines, various microscopes, 3D printers, combined bending and torsion apparatus, beam bending and principle stress and strain apparatus, thick cylinder test apparatus, momentum of inertia apparatus, balancing unit, mechanical vibration apparatus, sample preparation equipment, and measurement and instrumentation equipment
-    Proven experience and knowledge of computers (hardware and software) and with computerized data acquisition systems and controls hardware and software
-   Advanced knowledge and proficiency with Labview and data acquisition
-   Proven proficiency with stress and strain measurement and installation
-   Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Power Point, Excel, Word)
-   Strong engineering design background
-   A strong record of teamwork with the motivation and ability to work independently with little supervision
-   Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to support internal/external clients
-   Judgement, analytical and problem solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
-   Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments and demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
-   Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
-   Ability to innovate and suggest new ways of carrying out laboratory activities
-   Possesses a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
-   Excellent verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization
-   Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its requirements
-   Knowledge in proper handling procedures for toxic substances, proper separation of waste and documentation required for disposal
-   Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours
-   Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to growth and change
