Prime Management Group is pleased to be partnering with Ontario Tech Student Union to recruit for their Executive Director.

The Ontario Tech Student Union (OTSU) is a non-profit, student-led organization committed to enriching the student experience at Ontario Tech University. Their primary goal is to provide a wide range of services and amenities that promote the students' physical and mental well-being.
From providing valuable services, memorable experiences, and quality amenities the OTSU strives to ensure every student enjoys a meaningful university experience with the tools to thrive. Moreover, they understand the importance of fostering a collaborative environment where students can pursue their passions and develop their skills.

Role Summary:
The OTSU is seeking an experienced Executive Director to oversee the organization's management and operations. Reporting to the Board of Directors and President, the Executive Director will provide leadership, strategic direction and ensure the successful execution of the Student Union's vision and goals. Key responsibilities include managing staff, fostering stakeholder relationships, ensuring compliance, and overseeing financial planning and risk management. The ideal candidate will have nonprofit management experience, familiarity with unionized environments, strong leadership, and conflict resolution skills.

The Executive Director will:

Leadership & Governance
  • Serve as the corporate secretary, organizing monthly board meetings and providing operational reports.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop, adherence and maintain an annual vision and strategic plan for the Student Union and consistently enhance the effectiveness of their services.
  • Provide organizational leadership to the staff team as directed by the Board of Directors.
  • Identify and communicate internal and external issues that impact the Student Union.

Human Resource Planning, Finance & Management
  • Maintains management guidelines by overseeing operational and human resources policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain an HR infrastructure that promotes a positive, respectful, healthy, and safe environment.
  • Foster collaboration and communication among management, directors, and staff aligned with the strategic plan.
  • With the Board of Directors and Financial Controller provide oversight of sound financial processes and audit requirements for the OTSU as a non-for-profit organization
  • Maintain positive labour relations with unionized and management staff.
  • Reviews, assesses and evaluates the impact of changes to the collective agreements and employment legislation in collaboration with management.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage conflict resolution efforts for staff    

Community Relationship & Advocacy
  • Develop an innovative and suitable Public Relations strategy for the Student Union, and keep stakeholders informed about their work.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with Ontario Tech University, community groups, and other organizations to achieve organizational goals.
  • Oversee the Communications & Marketing Department to ensure alignment with the Board's strategic vision.

Student Experience & Engagement
  • Provides oversight of the Events and Engagement Departments concerning events, initiatives & clubs and societies system
  • Provides oversight of the Communications and Marketing Department to ensure information regarding the OTSU’s services reaches and meaningfully promotes student engagements
Legal Affairs & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with government, regulatory, and organizational requirements in addition to fulfilling the legal obligations of the Student Union.
  • Manage insurance and risk management aspects of the organization.
  • Perform risk management assessments for all Student Union events.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of facilities and assets.
  • Ensure secure storage of staff, student, and volunteer files while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

Qualifications:
As the strategic visionary Executive Director of the Ontario Tech Student Union, you will require the following:
 
  • Bachelor's degree in Business/Public Administration, Higher Education, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. However, a Master's degree in Business Administration is considered an asset.
  • Progressive senior management experience leading a non-profit organization and working with a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Experience in managing a unionized environment
  • Oversight of an annual operating budget.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation applicable to non-profit organizations.
  • Strategic thinking and planning abilities.
  • Proficiency in financial management and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in emotionally charged situations.
  • Strong computer knowledge and ability to learn and utilize new software.
